From Concept to Custom Solution: Canflex Engineers an Inflatable Pontoon System to Lift a Vessel
Every custom engineering project begins with a unique challenge.
When a customer in Mount Vernon, Washington required a specialized flotation system capable of safely lifting a vessel, Canflex partnered closely with them to transform an initial concept into a fully engineered inflatable pontoon system designed specifically for the application.
Rather than adapting an existing product, our engineering team developed a custom solution that met the project’s operational requirements while delivering the durability, reliability, and performance expected in demanding marine environments.
Engineered for Heavy Marine Lifting
The completed system consists of eight custom inflatable pontoons (four measuring 36 inches in diameter by 240 inches long and four measuring 24 inches in diameter by 240 inches long) working together to provide a total lifting capacity of approximately 70,400 lbs.
Each pontoon was designed with features that enhance both safety and performance, including integrated inflation fittings, 3.25 PSI pressure relief valves, multiple carrying handles, and a heavy-duty urethane protective sleeve engineered to minimize abrasion during operation.
The pontoons are connected together using reinforced polyester webbing and lifting slings, creating a stable system that distributes loads evenly while allowing controlled vertical movement. To maintain proper alignment during lifting operations, the pontoons are secured using their integrated handles, preventing unwanted lateral movement without restricting flexibility. Internal divider walls within the protective sleeve also help prevent stacking, ensuring the system remains stable throughout the lift.
For faster deployment, the design can also incorporate an optional manifold that allows all eight pontoons to be inflated simultaneously.
Designed Around the Customer’s Needs
Every application presents its own challenges, which is why this project was engineered specifically around the customer’s operational requirements rather than relying on a standard product.
From the initial concept and engineering drawings to material selection, RF welding, manufacturing, assembly, and quality control, every stage of the project reflected the collaboration and expertise of the Canflex team.
Seeing a custom solution successfully deployed in the field is the ultimate measure of engineering success—and a reminder that innovation happens when every department works toward a common goal.
Engineering Solutions That Perform
At Canflex, we understand that some challenges require more than an off-the-shelf product.
Whether supporting marine recovery operations, environmental response, industrial projects, or specialized applications, our team designs and manufactures custom flexible solutions that are built around our customers’ missions.
Because great engineering doesn’t start with a product, it starts with understanding the challenge.
